Week 8

The most common type of harassment is sexual harassment (Exhibit 20.2). Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome conduct that is sexual in nature, or is a sexual advance, or request for sexual favors. The conduct can also be offensive remarks about a person’s sex. To rise to the level of harassment, the conduct must:
·         • Be unwelcome
·         • Be frequent, severe, or pervasive
·         • Interfere with or create a hostile or offensive work environment or result in an adverse employment decision
Sexual harassment has been illegal since 1965.

In the movie 9 to 5 the floor manager not only verbally sexually harassed his subordinates, he was also doing it physically. He referred to the women as his girls. Dolly Parton’s character was the main receiving the physical mistreatment. He grouped and felt her up. It was even to the point of him having others perceive her as a “jezebel” (Definition of Jezebel. 1 : the Phoenician wife of Ahab who according to the account in I and II Kings pressed the cult of Baal on the Israelite kingdom but was finally killed in accordance with Elijah's prophecy. 2 often not capitalized : an impudent, shameless, or morally unrestrained woman.). In today’s society sexual harassment is an automatic termination if one is found to be guilty. It’s also frowned upon if the person turned out to not be guilty. Forcing one’s self on another person is out of the question at any time. Verbal harassment is also in the same category. It may be harder to prove but a person who is willing to verbally and or physically harass someone is a sick individual. It’s not right and never should be tolerated. Unfortunately it happens every day. Some institutions have protection from it others do not. I believe it all starts with the management. 

Week 7

Successful speakers use basic principles to deliver their messages. They do so to help ensure listeners will be receptive and will understand them. Some of these principles are shown in Exhibit 19.1.I I’m a Fashion and Retail Management professional. I’m a professional because of various qualities that I encompass. For instance, my attention to detail. When selling a particular garment. I always stay in the mind frame of how I would want to be treated as a customer or client. I inspect the garments as if I would be making the purchase. I feel for texture as well as fabric flow. I would also say I have somewhat of a business professional sense of style as well. I try to remain dressed as a gentleman. This includes clothing that fits, is in good condition, free from dirt or debris and no holes, burns, or burs. I have 10 years of management experience. I have managed millions of dollars’ worth of government assets without theft or major issues. Assets like helicopters, high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWV), and mine resistant ambush protected vehicles (MRAPS). I have also managed many military personnel is stateside and international scenarios. The largest amount of personnel I was ever responsible for was just under 1500 Marines and Sailors in a battalion size element. I pay attention to even the most minor details. I keep my appearance in good grooming standard. I can manage personnel at the unit level as well as battalion levels. Also I’m trustworthy in managing million dollar items. All these qualities and skills are what I believe makes me a fashion and retail management professional. I personally believe the way one carries themselves can truly speak to the testament of what kind of person they are. As above I’ve captured Career highlights that make me a professional.

EOC- Wk4 Beauty in the work place

I do think that in certain lines of work physical attractiveness is wanted and needed. You have to think worldly. Sex sales, it’s the bottom line. Man or woman physical attractiveness is a must. Job offers are typically made by managers of small operations (Exhibit 16.13) and human resources staff in large organizations. Some managers conduct background checks, drug tests, or obtain other information after a job offer is made. They do so because they do not want to risk losing their best candidates while they wait for information. Not ever scenario applies though for physical attractiveness. It doesn’t matter if you’re model worthy to be a janitor at Wal-Mart. No that may not be the case at Drais nightclub. It all depends on the particular industry. I do think it’s legal to hire “models” to serve in whatever capacity if that’s what’s required to operate that particular business. As for advice I would only say as long as sexual harassment isn’t an issue then there really shouldn’t be an issue. If the job requires models to be free of scars, and or blemishes it’s not much a person can do for that. These are uncontrollable factors and I don’t think it could totally disqualify a candidate. I would say it depends on the employer and needs of the company. Tattoos is another issue. If the job required no tattoos and the employee went and got a full sleeve then that violates what the person was hired for. There are industries that models with body art could be welcomed. A person could be hired at Hard Rock CafĂ© as a waiter or bartender. The tattoo look is welcomed in a place themed by music. Here in Las Vegas you see attractive people almost everywhere. It all depends on their industry. 

EOC Wk 3 - Discrimination

I believe that fairness in the work place is critical to an employer’s staff relations. When consistent treatment across the board is given to all employees it decreases the possibility of lawsuits against the company. I believe National Employment Lawyers Association sponsors the site because, I’m almost 100% sure that proper treatment from staff and subordinates is not always in play. Employee supervision is an ongoing activity to ensure that employees are productive, motivated, and supported in their work. Then the operation can run smoothly and customers will have the best possible experience. Supervisory responsibilities include training and developing employees as well as activities related to motivation, appraisal, discipline, and managing change”. It’s a very critical task to not only provide employees with fair treatment but also making sure they treat each other with dignity and respect as well.
There are many resources available on the National Employment Lawyers Association website. Off duty conduct is one. This provides information to how an employee should conduct themselves when away from the work place. Good or bad conduct and make or break a career. Medical privacy is also a resource to be used. Medical security and the confidentiality of personal information is big in the work place. It’s no one’s business what’s in your medical records unless it prevents you from conducting the job you were hired for. Lawyer service is also a provided resource on this site. Unfortunately in the work place misconduct happens on all levels. Lawyer information provided can be the make or break factor when improvement in the work place is needed. I believe being micromanaged and scrutinized because of poor training is a big factor in the work place. To solve this issue I would say employers should keep training records for each employee so that proper training can be conducted.

EOC: Wk 1Best and Worst Jobs

My worst job was working for a company named Spartan business and Technologies. I served in this capacity as a benefits advisor for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It wasn’t considered a federal job, however it was federal work for a contracted company. What made this company such a nuisance was the lack of team work and no unit cohesion. “Team members who work closely together generally have increased creativity and great ideas. These advantages are very useful as employees make decisions, solve problems, and help plan how to deliver products and services. Professional managers know that the quality of teamwork relates directly to the quality of the customer experience that is provided” While working for this company I was required to pay for govt. training events out of my own pocket. We were originally informed that our company would provide accurate funding for certain training. Later we were asked to support ourselves and we would be reimbursed no later than 2 weeks after the first day we returned from training. Well, let’s just say that didn’t happen. The last and final time I traveled with this company was to Colorado. Airfare was covered, as was room and board so I wasn’t complaining. Long story short. I was fooled. I hated the company and its poor leadership. After 6 months I left.

My best job was being a United States Marine. While in the Marine Corps, I had the opportunity to travel the world. I also participated in various special missions stateside and internationally. The only things I wasn’t too fond of while in the Corps were painful Middle East (Iraq) deployments. I met a lot of great people, some I consider my family for life. Marines are known for comradery and handling business. I would say it was one of the most challenging experiences in my life to this point. I loved every second of the Marine Corps and, Yes I would do it again.
